The gratitude Journal
I know that I have everything going for me. I have a great family, lots of friends, I live in a safe nice neighborhood in a nice house. I get good grades without trying too hard, I’m good at sports, arts and drama. I have a really full and happy life. But I just always feel a bit bla. I tend to see things in a negative, cup half empty kind of way. I feel so ungrateful but I just can’t rewire my way of seeing the world.
Since covid, our school plans these zoom guest speakers. I guess that’s a very small silver lining, we now have access to people and that we wouldn’t have had before. One motivational speaker mentioned a Gratitude Journal. I figured I would try it. How it works is; every night you take stock of the day and write down something that you are grateful for. It can be something huge like “I am grateful for a supportive family” or something seemingly small like, “I am grateful that I had a delicious lunch today”. I did this for two weeks straight and I was amazed at how many things I had to be thankful for. Very often I had multiple things to write in a night.
I realize that this may seem like a simple fix, but sometimes those are the most effective, and it has really helped me gain perspective of how lucky I am.
